Generally speaking, guitars can be roughly divided into three categories: classical guitars, acoustic guitars and electric guitars. Different types of guitars have different uses and styles

  • Classical guitar

The classical guitar, formerly known as the classical 6-string piano, is named classical guitar because it was shaped in the classical period. It belongs to Western plucked instruments and is generally used in multi-voice works. The classical guitar has a wide fretboard and nylon strings. It has a pure and thick sound quality and rich tones. It is called the "Prince of Musical Instruments", and is listed as the world's three major musical instruments along with the piano and violin. There are strict requirements from playing posture to finger touching the strings, and the skills are profound. It is the most artistic representative of the guitar family.

  • Folk guitar

Acoustic guitar can also be called acoustic steel-string guitar, with six strings, similar in shape to a violin, and usually appears in the form of song accompaniment during performance, and is often used in pop music, rock, blues, and folk songs. The folk guitar is the most "grounded" member of the guitar family. The number of people who use the folk guitar is the largest, and it is also the basis of all kinds of guitars. The fretboard is narrower than that of a classical guitar, and the slightly curved fretboard surface makes playing easier. The strings are all steel and alloy strings with a hard texture. The timbre is crisp and pleasant, with strong penetrating power, the volume is greater than that of classical pianos, and the metallic feeling is thick.

  • Electric guitar

The electric guitar is a product of modern technology. It is different from the traditional guitar from the shape to the sound principle. The sound generation and amplification of the electric guitar does not depend on the resonance of the body, but uses the principle of electromagnetism, so there is no need to design a hollow body and a body. Made of new hardwood, with volume, pitch control (knob) and tremolo structure (rocker). The sound comes from the current generated by the vibrating and cutting magnetic field of the strings and then amplifies it. The equipment requires the use of effects such as speakers and pickups.

The guitar is often seen as the main instrument in pop, rock, blues, folk, and flamenco. In the field of classical music, the guitar is often performed as a solo or duet; of course, in chamber music and orchestral music, the guitar also plays a considerable role as a foil.
